The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
